Located in San Diego, California, Stepping Stone of San Diego is a specialist rehabilitation facility that offers comprehensive treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders and alcohol and drug addiction, with a main emphasis on the LGBTQ population. Stepping Stone utilizes a social model of rehabilitation that places a strong emphasis on the value of peer and community support in the healing process. In a collaborative setting where people develop essential life skills and coping mechanisms via shared experiences and mutual support, clients live and work with around thirty other people.
At Stepping Stone, the residential program is tailored to each client’s unique requirements and is based on evidence-based techniques. Upon arrival, a systematic orientation procedure is used to acquaint new residents with the program. They are connected with a “buddy”—a fellow resident who offers support and responds to any inquiries they may have—during this period. Additionally, a main counselor and therapist are appointed to each client, and they will collaborate closely with them throughout their rehabilitation process.
Stepping Stone gives new participants a clear picture of what to anticipate during their stay by providing a comprehensive “day in the life of a resident” overview, which helps clients get adjusted to the program. As crucial elements of the program’s social model, residents are also encouraged to assume responsibilities within the community, such as volunteering for kitchen duty and other group activities.
